The Hermitage - Winter Palace

The magnificent Baroque building of the Winter Palace, designed by the Italian architect Rastrelli, was built in the middle of the 18th century. For over 150 years the Palace has been the residency of the Russian Imperial family.

The history of the Hermitage museum dates to 1764, the year when Catherine the Great acquired her first collection of European art. In the 20th century the Hermitage became one of the largest museums in the world. Almost 300 exposition rooms house over 3 million exhibit items representing art and culture of different peoples and epochs. Western European art had a very prominent place among the museum’s exhibits.

The collection is one of the best in the world and includes materpieces by Rafael, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, El Greco, Velasques, Rembrandt, Renoir, Matisse, Rodin, van Gogh, Picasso and other great masters.
